Ok when I DM a game, I have some simple starting rules
Starting Chars for lvl 1's
-roll stats on 4d6, discard the lowest. Exchange lowest stat for a 18
-Use full heaths, for ex d8 = 8hp
-allow 1 minor magical Item (players choiuce, but I have the final say) PLayers must provide backstory on said item.
-Players have 2 "DM health pots", these potions restore health to 100%
-players start with "Starting Package" stuff listed for each class in the PHB
-gold I keep the same, but I usually put easy-money quests if they are hurting too much.
thats bassically it, My style helps with tough situations so that people dont die at lvl 1.
What do you guys think? I think it works quite well.

I think you are probably throwing too many challenges at them at low level if they need all this to survive! Full hp at 1st level is standard, though. Lowest stat for an 18 is sort of... breaky.
How has this technique panned out for long-running campaigns?

No no. When they reach level three it reverts to the original low score. It helps keep wizards alive--take con 18 until you learn Bear's Endurance. Rogues can take str18 until they get the second sneak attack die.

3d6 six times in order for 3 characters, pick one.
Roll HP at first level.
Characters generally start with no equipment but a loin cloth and they typically begin being chased through the forest by wolves.

Oh man how you didn't like me Greymorn! I can't remember the rationale, but essentially I did start out with just a loincloth and before long I added a slave's irons to my ensemble.

Actually, It worked quite well. Peeps use the pots before lvl 5, and with the 18 thing, I think its nice, with low lvls, as they get higher I never noticed a dramatic advantige.
