A friend is getting me back into D&D and I need to make a map of my world. I used to have one but I disposed of it thinking that I would never role play again, let alone DM. So, any free, easy and hopefully powerful map creator programs out there? I can free hand it, but it might be better in color and what not.

I would do it by hand (digitally or on paper). You get so much more personality in the map that way. It just comes to life so much better.
There are a number of mapping resources out there:

And the links at the bottom of this page.
For software, here is a free opensource one: http://www.gryc.ws/autorealm.htm

Just for shits and giggles, I will share it once I have it finished up. Mind you, some spots on the map will be lacking certain info that players are not privellaged to know at the beginning of the campaign.

This one works pretty well for me:

Pencil and shades of graphite are usually my palette. I was just hoping to speed it up and have color at the same time.
